Baby Bear Isn't Hungry - A Breastfeeding Book for Children
After my review for Mama's Milk in a post here a few weeks ago the author, Michael Elsohn Ross, contacted me to ask if I'd like to review another of his books. I felt honoured to be asked as I had so thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the book which had led to the creation of a whole new blog for me, BookMums!
And so it was that yesterday morning I took delivery of Baby Bear Isn't Hungry.
Published by Yosemite Association 2006, and priced $9.95, Michael Elsohn Ross has once again written a delightful book for children showing how mama's milk is best for mammals.
In Baby Bear Isn't Hungry we witness a busy day in the life of Mama and Baby bear who have just awoken after "a long winter sleep" in Yosemite National Park. Whereas Mama bear’s first thoughts are for food, Baby bear just isn't hungry. And in sharp contrast to Mama bear who immediately begins foraging, Baby bear excitedly explores her environment.
However, after taking a tumble and accidentally ending up in a campsite, much to the alarm of a family of campers, Baby bear gets scared and cries out for her Mama. Naturally Mama bear abruptly loses her appetite as she tunes into her baby’s distress and goes off to find her.
With Mama bear safely beside her once again, Baby bear wants nothing more than to snuggle up into her for a feed - just like a human breastfed baby!
Beautifully illustrated by Consie Powell, the pictures throughout Baby Bear Isn't Hungry tenderly convey Mama and Baby bear's relationship, perfectly capturing the inquisitiveness of the young bear cub and the nurturing mother/child bond.
With its gentle rhythm and pleasant rhyming text Baby Bear Isn't Hungry is a perfect bedtime story for little ones.
Finally, what did my children make of it?
My three year old sat captivated as I read it to her and at the end pointed out that Mama bear was feeding her baby her own milk just as I do with her baby brother.
My six year old read it herself when she came home from school and enjoyed chatting about how some mammals hibernate and about how all mammals feed their own offspring with their own milk.
My 18 month old loved the pictures and made animal sounds as he pointed at the animals he recognised.
Overall, I think this is another wonderful book by Michael Elsohn Ross which is suitable for children from around 12 months to seven years.
Baby Bear Isn't Hungry comes highly recommended by me!
