If you are a new Mum you may be experiencing a roller coaster of emotions as your hormones rebalance after the birth of your little bundle of joy. Some days might be plain sailing with the house immaculate, a contented baby, the washing done and tea on the table domestic-goddess-style whilst others could be car crashes of weeping and wailing – you and the baby – mess everywhere and takeaway pizza for dinner.
If this sounds familiar then let me tell you here and now, this is perfectly normal! Do not beat yourself up when things go wrong just try to take a deep breath, get through to bedtime and focus on a fresh start the next day. There are some things which you can do to make things a bit easier so perhaps give these three top tips a try:
Ask for help. Family and friends will be there for you but won’t want to intrude so make sure you make it clear that assistance is welcome. Your Mum could pop to the super market while you breastfeed or a friend could take your mind off your lack of sleep by reading you the latest make up tips from a glossy magazine.
Eat properly. Keep on top of mealtimes and eat regularly and as healthily as you can. There is nothing wrong with a few treats but try to balance out with fresh fruit and vegetables and of course drink plenty of water.
Try and find some ‘me’ time. Escape to a bath and refresh your body and mind with a good soak then slather on your favourite moisturiser such as Oil of Olay and your outlook on the world is likely to be much improved.
And if you are pregnant reading this – then start to think about putting steps in place to make your new life more manageable. And of course, congratulations!
