Maternity Clothing: The Basics Explained - Guest Post

Having to buy clothes to fit your changing body shape can be extremely costly over a nine-month period.

However, by kitting yourself out with basic maternity clothes, you will not only save yourself money, but will be prepared with the essential clothing to get you through your entire pregnancy.

The basics for your pregnancy

Jeans

Your maternity jeans will more than likely be the hardest working items in your wardrobe and will get you through your whole pregnancy, as you can wear them as casual or dressed up.

There’s a wide range of different styles available for pregnant women, which include the stretchy jegging, bootcut, straight, skinny and boyfriend jean.

You can choose to go for either a microfiber over the bump band that will provide great stretch and comfort, or there’s the jersey panel, which fits under your bump to give you support as you grow over the coming months.

Dresses

Wearing a simple dress is perhaps one of the easiest and most comfortable pieces of clothing for a pregnant woman.

It can be dressed up with jewellery and heels for an evening out or a smart work look, or can be teamed up with jeans and leggings for a more casual outfit.

Vests and tunics

Both of these types of tops are easy to mix and match with other clothes and by layering vests and tunics over leggings or jeans, you’ll create a look that can last throughout your entire pregnancy.

You can also add a cardigan, jumper or hooded top depending on the weather.

Horizontal Stripes Proved to Flatter

Horizontal Stripes are Flattering After All

Horizontal striped maternity and nursing topWallingford – April 2010 Everyone who has been pregnant knows that as much as you can love your bump, it can make you feel large and frumpy at times. Dressing to make yourself feel like the gorgeous, blossoming woman you are is not always easy. Knowing whether to wear patterns, stripes, or blocks of colour to flatter your new figure can be a bit of a minefield and many of us revert back to wearing black, black, black.

The accepted wisdom from fashion gurus is that an outfit with vertical stripes appears to elongate your figure by drawing the eye up and down. But recent research has proved that in fact, the opposite is true and horizontal stripes are the most flattering for anyone with a less than perfect physique.

Dr Peter Thompson, a psychologist and expert in visual perception at the University of York, studied this phenomenon and concluded that “horizontal stripes don’t make you look fatter”.

Sweet Nursing: Pregnancy/ Breastfeeding Poncho

Hide'n'See-black-poncho Hide'n'See-white-poncho A few weeks back I mentioned I would be reviewing a Hide 'n' See Nursing/Pregnancy Poncho from Sweet Nursing.

Well, I'm finally getting around to it after the very busy Christmas and New Year period during which I was dying from the lovely flu doing the rounds at the moment.

Sweet Nursing design and supply a unique range of breastfeeding, nursery and baby products and the ponchos are pretty new to the range but oh boy, are they good! I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of them and I can tell you now that even though I am neither pregnant nor breastfeeding it is fashionable enough that any woman of any age would be thrilled to have one in her wardrobe!!

Made from premium soft organic cotton, the poncho is extremely warm in the present cold weather we're getting here in Ireland at the moment. And, since one of the qualities of cotton is that it is cool in the summer months it would also make a great summer time accessory too.
