Many women with large breasts (including me) struggle with breastfeeding in the early days, especially if you are trying to establish breastfeeding for the first time. The problem can stem from not being able to see what you are doing. I remember being told to roll up a rag and shove it under my boob to prop it up a bit. This actually really upset me, I felt like since I had given birth my whole body had gone southwards and there was something wrong with me. None of the other Mums at my breastfeeding group had been given this advice!!! I ended up just holding my breast most of the time in the early days. Not that it matters at all when I look back now, but I thought breastfeeding would be a completely intuitive process, not that I would need to stick a rag under my boob so I could feed my baby properly.
Anyway I actually gave up breastfeeding my first child after 3 weeks. I did not get the help I needed and breastfeeding was not intuitive for me, it took a lot of hard work and I am so proud that I managed to keep going with baby No2, and I am still feeding my son now and he is 16 mths!
Anyway help is now at hand, (oh how I wish one of these had been around 3 years ago!) A very clever lady has invented something called The Booby Booster, which is basically a booby sling to aid breastfeeding for large breasts. It boosts your boob up so you can concentrate on latching your baby on and generally it makes breastfeeding with large breasts more comfortable and practical. Totally obliterating the need to hold your breast with your hand throughout feeding. It truly is a great product and will help a lot of mums to continue breastfeeding. Available now at Sweet Nursing.
If you have any questions or would like any advice about this product or tips on breastfeeding (especially tips for breastfeeding problems with large boobs) I am always around for a chat either by email or phone.
